Many churches are adopting the Emerging Church model without really knowing what is being taught by it's leadership.  They do not recognize the Universalism, pantheism, New Age and eastern mysticism that is leavened in.  In a rush to be relevant to postmodern culture they forget that postmodernism is a worldview that is not biblical.  Instead of catering to postmodernism they should be discipling this generation to a biblical paradigm.  EC proponents are quick to point out the ways in which dead churches are dead.  But the solution they propose is far worse than the problems they say they will solve.  Why churches feel pressured to get involved with New Age practices and teachings is beyond me.  People need to see a difference in Christians, not the same worldly ideas they can get from reading "The Secret" or "The Shack".  We adopt a new culture when we are born again which is laid out in the Bible by the Jesus Christ, the Apostles and prophets.  In order to be light and salt to the world we must demonstrate by our words and actions that we no longer subscribe to the vain philosophies and worldviews of this world, but that we have been transformed.

Ro 12:2  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The feature article for this newsletter is Willow Creek’s Big Adventure by Gary Gilley, Think On These Things Newsletter, December 2007 - Volume 13, Issue 12.  Having discerned that the old way of the seeker movement failed to produce the spiritual product they desired, Willow is fast-forwarding to the newest wave that now promises what they did 30 years ago – “authentic, Acts 2 communities of faith.”  This, however, is an even more tragic step, for while the seeker movement has gone astray in many areas in their attempt to change the way we “do” church, the majority within the movement at least gave lip-service to the fundamentals of the faith. The emergent church, however, seeks not to change how we “do” church but to change the church itself by challenging the non-negotiable doctrines of the faith.  Combining the emergent deconstructive philosophy with Willow Creek’s influence and money could prove to be a powerful force for destruction.   What may be written on this next “clean sheet of paper” in the future is far more concerning than the one that is being thrown away today.

Sometimes the situation was so severe that it took me some time to forgive and start the process of healing for myself, and eventually for others. I learned that a Christian needs to forgive other people even if they have not repented of their sins. That can be really hard if we let it be hard. But if we give our burdens over to the Lord, He will carry them and that frees us up to treat other people with love, compassion, and be in the right frame of mind and heart to set them up for reconciliation with Jesus Christ. That does not mean we tolerate their sin. We simply forgive them for what they have done to us, whether perceived or real, and move on to looking for ways to redeem them. We can then present to them the “truth in love” even when we have to rebuke them.
